What a DECT headset is

DECT stands for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. A business DECT headset talks to its own base or USB adapter instead of the Bluetooth radio in your computer. The base then connects to your computer and, on compatible systems, to your desk phone. In the US the standard is called DECT 6.0. It runs on the 1.9 GHz band, so it doesn't interfere with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and US DECT 6.0 products aren't compatible with DECT systems sold in other regions. Our quick guide to DECT 6.0 explains it in plain words.

Every headset in this collection is a DECT system: a headset plus a base or adapter. Pick one in three steps: what it has to connect to, how far you want to walk while you talk, and how you like to wear it.

DECT vs Bluetooth

Bluetooth isn't bad, and for many people it's the right tool. If your day is a laptop and a mobile phone, you travel, or you move between work locations, a business Bluetooth headset will usually suit you better. As our DECT vs Bluetooth guide puts it, "don't pay for DECT capabilities that you may not need." Those models are in our Bluetooth headsets for business.

When DECT is the better fit

DECT earns its place when you spend most of the day at one workstation, take calls on a desk phone, or want to leave your desk without dropping the call. A DECT headset keeps its own link to its base, so it doesn't add one more device to the Bluetooth signals around your desk, which matters most when the headset is in use all day. Our WH63 E2 review adds two more reasons: DECT "handles busy environments better than Bluetooth", and "the military grade encrypted connection gives peace of mind that client conversations are secure".

DECT and Bluetooth in one headset

You don't always have to choose. The Yealink HA64 Pro, HA68 Pro and WH64 build Bluetooth into the headset itself: DECT for your desk phone and computer, Bluetooth for your mobile, and the headset can leave the office with you. As our HA68 Pro review says, "Bluetooth travels with the headset." Other systems, such as the Poly Savi series and the Jabra Engage 75 SE, put Bluetooth in the base. That works at your desk, but "having Bluetooth in the base limits Bluetooth use to the range of the base."

Range: what the rating means

Range is the benefit most people link with DECT. The Yealink HA64 Pro, HA68 Pro and WH64 are rated up to 606 ft in DECT mode, the Jabra Engage 55 SE, 65 SE and 75 SE up to 490 ft, and the Poly CS540 and Discover D904 up to 350 ft. Those ratings come from open-field tests, so our rule for any make or model is to "take the manufacturers range statement, and cut it in half" to allow for walls, doors and cubicles.

In our football field range test, the HA64 Pro stayed clear from the back of one end zone to the back of the other, while a Jabra Bluetooth headset lost the connection around the 40 yard line. Ask yourself whether you need to walk to a printer, another office or the warehouse mid-call. If you do, "DECT deserves serious consideration." Range is your top need? See our longest range wireless headsets.

Desk phone, computer or both

DECT systems differ most in what the base connects to:

  • Desk phone and computer: the Yealink WH63 E2 base has two USB-C ports, one for a laptop and one for a desk phone (see our WH63 E2 review). The Jabra Engage 65 SE connects to a desk phone and a computer, and the Engage 75 SE to up to five devices.
  • Desk phone first: the Poly CS540 plugs into your desk phone and works with a computer through an optional D315 adapter (more in our CS540 review). Some systems come in two versions, such as the EPOS Impact D 10 Phone for desk phones and the Impact D 10 USB for computers.
  • No base: portable models use a small DECT USB adapter instead. The Jabra Engage 55 SE works with computers only (see our Engage 55 convertible review), and the Yealink WH62 Portable plugs into a computer or a USB desk phone.

To answer and end calls when you're away from your desk, the headset has to control the phone. Yealink headsets do that on compatible Yealink phones out of the box (see our Yealink phone guide). Most other pairings need an EHS cable or a handset lifter. The table above lists common pairings for the DECT models on this page. For the HA64 Pro, HA68 Pro, WH64 and CS540 by phone brand, see our wireless headsets for office phones, and check your exact model in our compatibility guide.

Teams or UC version?

Many DECT headsets come in a Microsoft Teams version and a UC version. On the WH63 E2, "The Microsoft Teams variant is simple to set up, with preloaded Teams software and a dedicated Teams button", while the UC version works with the other major platforms. The HA64 Pro skips the choice: you switch between Teams and UC on its touchscreen. "No need to order a pre-configured variant, or download software."

Busy offices and call centers

Many DECT headsets can share one floor. Our WH63 E2 review notes that it "supports up to 200 users (Europe) in the same space without crosstalk". In very dense rooms, our DECT benefits guide suggests mixing in models that run on a different technology. A busylight helps too: the HA64 Pro, HA68 Pro, WH64 and Engage 75 SE have one built in, and the WH63 E2 base takes an optional Yealink BLT60. Of the HA68 Pro's busylight, we wrote: "This isn't sophisticated technology, but in an open office it can be surprisingly useful."

Comfort and talk time

Choose the wearing style first. Mono models leave one ear open for the room, and dual-ear models block more of it (see mono vs stereo). Convertible models switch styles: the WH63 E2 weighs just 19 grams and comes with earbuds, ear loops and a mono headband, and the CS540 and Engage 55 SE are convertible too. If your space is loud, the HA68 Pro adds hybrid ANC, which "becomes considerably more valuable" in an open office or a busy home.

Then check talk time against your longest day. In DECT mode the HA64 Pro is rated up to 14 hours (mono) or 16 hours (dual) and the HA68 Pro up to 16 hours. The Jabra Engage 65 SE and 75 SE are rated up to 13 hours, the Engage 55 SE up to 9 and the WH63 E2 up to 8. For back-to-back shifts, the Discover D904 comes with two swappable batteries.

Frequently asked questions

What is a DECT headset?

A DECT headset is a wireless headset that talks to its own base or USB adapter using DECT, short for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications, instead of Bluetooth. The base connects to your computer and, on compatible systems, to your desk phone, so you can keep talking while you walk around the office. Some models, like the Yealink HA64 Pro, also have Bluetooth in the headset for your mobile. Our DECT vs Bluetooth guide explains the difference.

What is DECT 6.0?

DECT 6.0 is the US version of the DECT wireless standard that cordless phones and many wireless headsets use. It runs on the 1.9 GHz band, so it doesn't interfere with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. US rules differ from other regions, so DECT 6.0 products aren't compatible with DECT systems sold elsewhere. For a headset, DECT 6.0 means it uses that standard to talk to its base. Our quick guide to DECT 6.0 has more.

Is DECT or Bluetooth better for an office headset?

Neither wins everywhere. DECT is usually the better fit if you work at one desk, use a desk phone or want to walk far from your desk during a call. Bluetooth suits people who mainly use a laptop and a mobile phone, travel, or move between work locations. If you want both, the Yealink HA64 Pro, HA68 Pro and WH64 have DECT and Bluetooth built into the headset. Compare every option in our wireless office headsets.

Can a DECT headset connect to my desk phone and my computer?

Many can, through the base. The Yealink WH63 E2 base has USB-C ports for a laptop and a desk phone, and the Jabra Engage 65 SE connects to both. Some don't: the Jabra Engage 55 SE works with computers only, through a small USB adapter. To answer calls away from your desk, a non-Yealink desk phone may also need an EHS cable or a handset lifter. Check the table on this page or our compatibility guide.

Can I get a DECT headset with earbuds or a headphone style?

Yes. Convertible DECT headsets such as the Yealink WH63 E2 come with earbuds, ear loops and a headband, and the Poly CS540 and Jabra Engage 55 SE also convert between wearing styles. If you'd rather cover both ears, look at dual-ear models such as the Yealink HA64 Pro duo, the HA68 Pro with hybrid ANC or the Jabra Engage 75 SE stereo. Our mono vs stereo guide helps you choose.

Which brands make DECT headsets for work?

We carry DECT headsets from Yealink (HA64 Pro, HA68 Pro and the WH6x series), Jabra (Engage), Poly, formerly Plantronics (Savi and CS540), EPOS (Impact SD, SDW, D 10 and 5000) and Discover (D904 and Adapt 30). You can also shop by brand: Yealink wireless, Jabra Engage, Poly wireless and EPOS wireless.

Where can I find setup help for a Poly (Plantronics) DECT headset?

Start with our guide to using a Plantronics wireless headset, which covers office phones with and without a headset port and remote answering accessories. For the CS540, our CS540 setup resource center has a guide for each setup, including the HL10 lifter and EHS cables. Still stuck? Talk to an Advisor and we'll walk you through it.
