Some might argue that the Evolve2 65 Flex should be the go-to product, but that's a discussion for another day. This is all about the Evolve2 85 and what features it has, and what makes it worth your time to consider. Who's A Good Match For The Jabra Evolve2 85?

The Jabra Evolve2 85 headset offers unparalleled comfort and sound quality, but headsets aren't designed to be one size fits all. There are different headset wearing styles, and when shopping for a new headset, you'll want to select the wearing style that matches your wearing preference.

The ideal candidate for a Jabra Evolve2 series headset like the Evolve2 85 includes those who value premium sound and noise-cancellation features:

  • Those who prefer an over-the-head, double-ear headset wearing style.
  • Those who need a professional grade headset for business voice and video calls.
  • Those who are looking for a headset to use with desktop or laptop computers, and mobile devices.
  • Those who are looking for a headset that reduces background noise.
  • Anyone who wants to have great sounding audio for music or podcasts.
  • Those who are needing a comfortable headset.

Generally speaking, The Jabra Evolve2 85 model checks many boxes for users seeking a combination of comfort, durability, and sound clarity, but no headset is perfect, so what might make you pass on the Jabra Evolve2 85?

Why this might not be the headset for you

  • Some people prefer a single ear headset, or a headset that's worn over the ear. The Evolve2 85 is only available in an over-the-head, double ear configuration
  • Not everyone enjoys the sensation of having both ear fully covered.  For some, it can leave them with a feeling of too much sound isolation.
  • The weight of the headset might make this headset difficult to wear all day long. It weighs over 10 ounces, and by double ear headset standards, that's on the heavy side.
  • The price of the Evolve2 85 is higher than many other over-the-head, double ear headsets, which might place it out of your budget.

Devices you can use the Evolve2 85 with

The Evolve2 85 was designed to be used with:

  • Desktop computers
  • Laptop computers
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Audio sources that support a 3.5mm connection

The headset connects to computers via an included USB adapter. You have your choice between USB-A, and USB-C. And though the Evolve2 85 can connect to Bluetooth capable computers wirelessly, the USB adapter provides a much better connection experience. Using the adapter, you'll get a number of benefits over connecting via Bluetooth:

  1. A more stable wireless connection
  2. Better voice audio quality
  3. Longer wireless range
  4. Remote call answering with compatible software

Besides being able to connect to your computers, the Evolve2 85 can also be used with your smartphone or tablet.

You can also connect your Evolve2 85 headset to audio sources that accept a wired, 3.5mm pin connection. The Evolve2 85 comes with a 3.5mm cable giving you even more devices you can use it with.

Microphone sound quality

Customer surveys have revealed that sound quality is critical when selecting a premium headset like the Jabra Evolve2 85, ensuring crystal-clear audio during calls. With that in mind,  you might want to know how the Evolve2 85 sounds.

The Lowdown On Sound

The Evolve2 85 is widely regarded as a professional grade business headset. When designing the Evolve2 85, Jabra fully understood that a headset of this type needed to sound professional because premium headsets need premium sound.

The Evolve2 85 comes with 4 analog and 6 digital MEMS microphones which are fine tuned to clearly pick up your voice, and not the noise going on around you. These are two important aspects of any high quality business headset; voice audio quality, and the ability to dampen, or remove unwanted background noise.

Controlling Background Noise

Background noise is removed two ways:

  1. Reducing the sound your callers hear, which is made possible by the noise canceling microphone.
  2. Reducing background noise for the person wearing the headset through Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)

The Jabra Evolve2 85 does a respectable job of removing noise which is important if you work around noisy coworkers, or from home with the challenging sounds of pets and children.

So when sound quality matters, you'll be in good hands with the Jabra Evolve2 85. It's a premium headset, that delivers a premium audio experience.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)

man wearing a jabra evolve2 85 headset in office. wording beneath talking about noise reduction

ANC is a popular feature because it gives the person wearing the headset the ability to block out distracting background noise. Less distractions means better concentration which translates into being more productive. So unlike a noise canceling microphone that's designed to give your callers a better sounding experience, ANC gives the silent treatment to the person wearing the headset. And in this case, silence is golden.

On the left earcup of the Jabra Evolve2 85, you'll find the ANC button that allows you to activate this feature. So when noise starts ramping up around you (think noisy coworkers, dogs barking, children playing etc), simply press the ANC button and you'll hear those sounds fade away. And if you've never experienced this before when wearing a headset in the past, I'm confident you'll be blown away.

HearThrough Convenience

HearThrough is another standard feature on the Jabra Evolve2 85, but you might not be aware of this feature, and what it does. If so, here's a quick breakdown:

When wearing a headset it's common for someone to approach you, wanting to have a face-to-face conversation. This would normally require you to remove the headset to have that conversation. The frustration is this can happen repeatedly throughout the day which is known to be annoying.

The Jabra Evolve2 85 has HearThrough, so you can have those conversations, or just hear your surroundings, without the need to remove the headset. This feature makes it safer if you're wearing the headset out of the office (you'll hear vehicles and people for example), and having HearThrough is one of those features that removes one of life's little annoyances off your list.

The feature is easy to access, because like with ANC, you simply press a button. When you do, it activates external microphones that pick up sound, and relays that sound to your ear speakers. Problem solved!

All Business, Or Business Casual

two images of a man wearing Jabra Evolve2 85 headset with the microphone boom arm down, and a second image with the boom arm tucked away, out of sight

When you use the Jabra Evolve2 85, you have the ability to take advantage of the advanced microphone technology. Simply drop the mic boom down, and the short boom is nearby to pickup your voice and dampen the surrounding noise.

If you're in a casual mode, and want to listen to some music, the microphone boom arm swings up, and stows neatly away in a thin, built-in compartment. It's like getting two headsets in one:

  • A professional grade Blluetooth wireless headset for your voice and video calls
  • A pair of headphones for your streaming media

Either way you use the Jabra Evolve2 85, you're bound to find a great deal of satisfaction.

On-Ear Detection

The more advanced headsets are those that come with features not commonly found on other headsets. One of those advanced features is called on-ear detection. Simply put, this is a smart feature that knows when the headset is on, and when it's off.

When you're in the middle of something, like on a call, or listening to music for example, and you remove the headset, it knows the headset has been taken off. When listening to music, and you remove the headset, it will pause the music. Putting it back on causes the music to resume automatically.

If you're on a call and you remove the headset, it will mute the microphone. Placing the headset back on will unmute the microphone.

Smart sensors are another reason why the Jabra Evolve2 85 is a smart headset, and a smart choice.

Ear Speakers

man wearing a jabra evolve2 85 with text talking about sound quality

If listening to music is on your list of things you'll use a headset for, then it should come as good news that the Evolve2 85 features leak tolerant 40mm ear speakers. And when you combine that with Jabra's advanced chipset, you're treated to some very satisfying sound. That includes the bass bump you're looking for along with the mids and highs. All in all, you'll like what you hear. And when you stop to consider that this is a premium business headset, it's pretty impressive that Jabra engineered it with audio that sounds this good.

Battery Details

image of evolve2 85 headset on desk top with text talking about battery specifications

How long you can talk, and listen matters when it comes to using a wireless headset. The last thing you want is a headset that drops the call when you're in the middle of an important conversation.

Here's The Evolve2 85 Battery Details:

  • Up to 37 hours of listening time if the ANC feature is off, 32 if it's on
  • Up to 26 hours of talk time with ANC and busylight off, 21 with ANC and busylight on
  • Recharge time is up to 140 minutes
  • 30% charge after 30 minutes, and 60% after 60 minutes on the charger

As Blueooth headsets go, the battery specs on the Evolve2 85 are solid. That's not to say that you can't find other headsets that offer more battery life, because you can. But where do you draw the line between what's needed, and just unecessary? Still, the battery life on the Jabra Evolve2 85 wireless headset is on the higher side of battery talk and listening time, so chances are good that this battery will provide more than enough juice to power you through any kind of workday, and marathon music listening.

Use while charging. One last thing is you can continue to use the Evolve2 85 as a wired headset when you use the charge cable to recharge the battery. This is something you won't find on most headsets, which makes the headset more versatile, and you more productive.

Connectivity

When using the Jabra Evolve2 85, you have several connection options.

  1. You can connect to Bluetooth enabled computers wirelessly, which I don't recommend because there's a better computer connection option. in #2
  2. You can connect to desktop or laptop computers via the included Link 380 USB adapter for a more reliable, better sounding call, longer wireless range, and advanced features you won't get when connecting via Bluetooth.
  3. You can wirelessly connect to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth
  4. You can connect to a computer USB-A port with the included cable and use it as a wired headset when recharging the battery
  5. And, the Evolve2 85 comes with a 3.5mm cable for use in connecting to devices that support 3.5mm connectivity.

Simply put, you have a lot of versatility.

a collage of UC software companies logos

The Jabra Evolve2 85 can be used with all the leading UC software applications such as Microsoft Teams, RingCentral, Zoom, Google Meet, Dialpad and many others. You can even get remote call answering with compatible programs which means you can answer calls when away from the desk. This is a highly desireable feature that helps you to be more productive, and gives your callers better service. And if that weren't enough, you avoid missing calls, and avoid the voice messages, and the calls to return.

    Software For Your Hardware

Image of computer monitors with Jabra Direct software showing on screen

Jabra offers free downloadable software to help make updating the firmware simple and easy. You can also customize, or personalize your headset with adjustments to things like ringtones, sidetone, remote call answering and a lot more.

Jabra Direct is available for download to Windows and Mac operating systems, and it helps to keep your headset up-to-date, and working efficiently.

    Ordering Options

When ordering the Evolver2 85 you can choose from:

    • Microsoft Teams, or UC variant
    • USB-A, or USB-C adapters
    • Charging stand, or no charging stand

If Microsoft Teams is your primary business communications vehicle, then you'll want to order that version. But, if you use Teams, but also other programs such as RingCentral, Zoom or others, then you'll want to order the UC variant.

The Evolve2 85 comes with a Jabra Link 380 USB adapter. It's important to match the right connection type when ordering. Some  computers use USB-A ports, while others use the newer, USB-C. Keep this in mind when placing your order. If you do order the incorrect Adapter, you can get a converter that adapts it to the correct connection type (USB-A to USB-C, or USB-C to USB-A). Otherwise, contact us, and we'll assist in getting you the right device.

If you prefer to dock the headset into a stand rather than plugging it in for a recharge, then make sure to order the optional headset stand. You can still use the cable to recharge the headset when you want to continue using it in the office, or for those times when you're out of the office with your headset.

    FAQ's

Q: What is the wireless range of the Evolve2 85?

A:  It's rated up to 100 feet, but how much range you'll get will depend on how many barriers your wireless signal will travel through. Barriers such as walls, elevators etc. all degrade the strength of a Bluetooth wireless signal which can lower range. We normally use the rule of thumb of half the stated range as usable range. In this case, that'd be around 50 feet.

Q: Does the headsert come with a Bluetooth adapter?

A: Yes. It comes with a Jabra Link 380 wireless Bluetooth adapter. It comes pre-paired to the headset so it's a plug and play situation. Adapters will give you a better wireless connection, better audio quality, longer range and remote call answering with compatible software apps.

    Q: How do I recharge the Evolve2 85?

A: Two ways; first, if you purchased the optional charging base, you can place the headset on that for a battery recharge. If you didn't order that, then plug in the included USB-C to USB-A battery charge cable to recharge the battery.

Q: How long does the battery last?

A: There are different times, which depend on whether you're listening to music, or on a live call. Battery life also depends if you're using other features like Active Noise Cancellation, or a busylight for example. But here's what you need to know:

    • Up to 37 hours of listening time if the ANC feature is off, 32 if it's on
    • Up to 26 hours of talk time with ANC and busylight off, 21 with ANC and busylight on
    • Recharge time is up to 140 minutes
    • 30% after 30 min and 60% after 60 min on the charger

    Q: Does the Evolve2 85 have a 3.5mm jack?

A: Yes. The headset not only has a 3.5mm jack, but when you guy an Evolve2 85, it comes with a 3.5mm cable for connecting the headset to devices that support 3.5mm audio inputs.

Q: Is Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) active during a call?

A: No. When you are on a call, the microphone activates and ANC and Hearthrough will deactivate. This is intended, as the sidetone then let you hear your voice and be aware of the volume of your voice when you speak.

When the call is finished, the sound mode will return to the setting that was in use before the call.

    Note
You can use the Sound Modes button on the left earcup to cycle through these options: ANC, Off, HearThrough.

Q: How do I manually turn on HearThrough on my Jabra Evolve2 85?

A: To manually turn on HearThrough, press the Sound modes button on the left earcup to cycle through the available options until HearThrough is announced.

    Left earcup

You can configure HearThrough settings using Jabra Sound+ (Google Play | App Store) on your smartphone or Jabra Direct on your computer.

Q: How do I turn on/off Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) on my Jabra Evolve2 85 headset?

A: You can turn on/off ANC manually on the headset and also using Jabra Sound+.

    Turn on/off ANC manually
Press the Sound Modes button on the left earcup to cycle through these options: Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), HearThrough, Off.

Turn on/off ANC using Jabra Sound+

    1. In Jabra Sound+, select the Moment you want to customize.
Moments in Jabra Sound+ are customized independently from one another. If you select a different Moment, you may need to repeat these steps.
    2. In Sound Modes, change the setting according to your personal preferences.

You can configure ANC settings using Jabra Sound+ (Google Play | App Store) on your smartphone or Jabra Direct on your computer.

Q:  Is the Jabra Link 380 Bluetooth adapter compatible with a desk phone that has USB connectivity?

A:  No, the Jabra Link 380 is built with a different and more advanced technology that is not compatible with most desk phones.

The Jabra Link 380 is engineered to ensure performance with other systems in wireless connectivity, USB-C connectivity, security and longer range, as well as to prepare for more advanced functionality with future products.

    Q: What's the difference between the Jabra Evolve2 75, and the 85?

A: The 85 model comes with larger ear cushions that fully surround the ear. The Evolve2 75 ear cushions go against the ear. The 85 model also comes with a 3.5mm audio jack, and an audio cable for connectivity to other supported devices.  The 85 is a larger headset, and it weighs more than the 75. The Evolve2 75 has a bit more battery life compared to the 85. These are a few of the differences.

    Q: What is sidetone

A: Sidetone is audio feedback from one's own voice, that a headset/headphones user hears when speaking into the microphone. Voice is picked up by the microphone and transmitted to the speaker. You can typically adjust the sidetone level on a Jabra device through the free software.

Q: What do the LEDs on my Jabra Evolve2 85 mean?

A: Here is an explanation of the LED colors and behaviors.

    Note
The Jabra Evolve2 85 comes in a UC variant and a Microsoft Teams variant. The Microsoft Teams variant features a Microsoft Teams button and LEDs. These are indicated in the following image by an asterisk.

The following explanation is in English. For translated versions check the available languages of the user manual in the Product documents section.

Q: What is the wireless range of the Evolve2 85?

A: The range is rated up to 100 feet, or 30 meters. However, the actual range you get will depend on your environment, and how many obstructions exist between your headset and your phone or computer that you're using it with. More obstructions between them means less wireless range. A good rule of thumb is to estimate half the stated range. In this case, that would be about 50 feet, plus or minus.

Q: How do I manually turn on/off the busylight(s) on my Jabra Evolve2 headset?

A: When you are wearing the headset and on a call, the busylight(s) automatically light up red to indicate that you are busy.

To manually turn on/off the busylight(s), simultaneously press the Volume up and Volume down buttons on the right earcup.

    Note
You can configure busylight settings using Jabra Sound+ (Google Play | App Store) on your smartphone or Jabra Direct on your computer.

Great headset!! If you like the ability to use the bluetooth and the value added options of the USB dongle as well as superior noise cancellation with the option to also hear your surroundings, then I can assure you that you will not regret purchasing a set of these headphones! Remember to specify if you want the TEAMS or the “UC” system conformity. I have the TEAMS version and they work very well with that platform for business interactions.

Does NOT work well with Windows 11 MS Teams

I purchased this headset because I liked the 75 a lot, that is until I moved to WIndows 11. With WIndows 11, when you move the mic arm up to mute, it also turns off the speaker as well. I saw that the 85 was "certified" to work with MS Teams and paid $576 for it. Sadly, this MS Teams "CERTIFIED" product has the SAME issue!! I hope you like having the mic arm down ALL the time, because it's the same as turning it off while in a MS Teams meeting - you can't hear anything and no one can hear you. My team members said I sounded VERY loud and I switched back to the 75. Perhaps I could have adjusted the output volume in settings, but I didn't bother because of the other issue. It's also feels much heavier than the 75, maybe it's not and it's the very snug fit of it. I have a small head, so not sure how someone with a big head would get along.

Thank you for your feedback and we're sorry to hear your experience. Please contact our tech support team so we can find a resolution for you. https://headsetadvisor.com/pages/contact-us

    very mediocre

Expensive headset and figured I would treat myself because so much of my work in on Teams. I used a Jabra evolve 75 until it died and it worked great. This, however, not so much. The fit is poor with the mic running into my face unless I tilt the headset to weird angles. The sound quality of my mic over the dongle is terrible, sounds like I am wearing the mic 6 feet from my head. I am using bluetooth which is working well, but I cannot do that with all the computers I need to use for work. I asked to return and was advised to adjust then hard plastic and nearly immobile mic and to update the firmware on the dongle. The latter is impossible, I am using it on a secure work computer at home and in the office, the bluetooth is disabled on my desktop. All in all, it did not meet my expectations and I am looking to return it and buy a different model.

Not bad but has annoying flaws and feels like it was abandoned by Jabra

    Things I like:
    - Busy light indicates when I'm in a call or a meeting so my wife knows not to disturb me.
    - ANC is good, I had Bose QC35 before and I honestly did not notice a difference.
    - Retractable mic boom arm. It allows the speech to be a lot clearer than mics in the headphones themselves, plus it allows me to use these headphones outside. I even used them on a plane once and it was a great experience overall.
    - Hear-through mode is useful, used it a lot during traveling and while working when I need to hear my surroundings.
    - Sound quality is good.

Now the things I don't like:
    - Mode switching button always cycles ANC / Off / Hear-through. So in order to go from ANC to Hear-through (the most often use case) two button presses are required. I would much rather prefer this to be configurable to remove Off from this list as I never had a use for this mode.
    - During a call the mode switches to Off automatically so to get ANC back I have to press the mode switch button. Also, during calls the list of modes change to Off / ANC with no Hear-though option. Weird.
    - iOS app is unreliable. Most of the time it can't detect the headset while it is paired and connected to the phone. All it shows is "Welcome back. Turn on and connect your device."
    - There is a weird bug when using the headphones with the charging stand. I usually turn the headset off at the end of the day and put them on the stand. When I take them from the stand the next day and turn them on, there is a 50/50 chance they would become unresponsive and won't connect to anything (phone, dongle) unless I power cycle them. It sounds like they go into a weird semi-on state when they will announce "Battery high" immediately after I put them on my head without me even touching the on/off switch. And then when I flick the switch to On I hear "No device connected". I tried several Evolve2 85 headsets on the latest firmware (1.3.8) and all of them exhibit the same issue. It is not consistent so sometimes it only happens once a week - and sometimes it happens every day. Very confusing.
    - Jabra Link 380 dongle has a very aggressive power-saving feature that switches off audio streaming if it detects silence for more than 1-1.5 seconds, and it takes half a second to wake up after it detects audio again. As a result, any tutorial/video that has silent parts in between sentences becomes very painful to listen to, with constant fade-ins and lost words.
    - The latest firmware update was in December 17, 2020. It looks like this product was abandoned.

Great headset just as the Headset Advisor reviews had said!

I had recently taken a position with a company that uses the MS TEAMS platform for a great deal of their in-house training and meeting sessions as well as lots of conference calls. I could tell very early on that a good headset was going to be very helpful during those office activities. Since I had already owned a set of Jabra earbuds, I was leaning toward the Jabra Evolve2 85 headsets, but given their price tag, I wasn’t comfortable “trying them out” and potentially not finding them adequate for my needs. I did a lot of research on them and in that process I found headset advisor. I watched the review videos and the various comparison videos on the channel and those were what helped me finally to decide to go ahead with my purchase. After receiving them, I used them for the various functions and features they have been designed for and there is no doubt they are likely the best headset around for not only TEAMS activities, but just generally speaking as well! No regrets and I will always recommend them to friends and colleagues.

Hi Bradley, glad our reviews were able to help you and thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts. This helps fellow buyers a lot!

Just what I was looking for. Just a very good headset for working from home and in the office. I really appreciate that music also sounds very enjoyable as well.
