Should You Buy A Single Ear Or Dual Ear Headset?

When it comes time to buy a new headset, one of the choices you’ll need to make is do you purchase a single ear or dual ear headset? Seems like a very small detail and a simple decision, right? Not exactly. 

In this blog, I’m going to discuss some of the typical environmental working conditions that may make this seemingly simple decision, a bit more complicated than how it appears on the surface.

Work environments vary greatly, and the interesting part is they aren’t static, but dynamic instead. Take for example, someone who’s working from home. Imagine them working away peacefully from the comfort of their home office. Pretty quiet, right? Sure is.

That is, until little Baby Jessica wakes up from her mid-morning nap and starts crying at the same time Fido the wonder dog starts barking. Oh, and did I mention that was while you were on your most important call of the day? What was peaceful and quiet earlier, turned loud and distracting.

Another example

For those who work in an open office arrangement where people sit close together. Yes, the Covid outbreak of 2020 has put the brakes on these kinds of settings, but chances are good that we’ll see these kinds of settings in the near future once again.

In office environments like this, the noise level can vary a lot. At certain points during the day, the volume of noise might be low and very pleasant. You’re not hearing a lot of distracting noise around you, and you easily keep your concentration.

Then, someone in your work group lands that monster account they’ve been working on for the past 2 years, and the party’s on. That concentration is now gone and it’s going to be a while until you regain it. 

In both of the above examples, which kind of headset is best?

A single ear or double ear? Hard to know for sure. A single ear headset, or mono headset is perfect for those times when the noise levels are low. However, when things get noisy, that’s when a double ear headset, or duo headset would be best. 

Some people prefer to have one ear uncovered by a headset speaker because they like to hear what’s going on around them. There are some who don’t prefer to have both ears covered because it makes regulating their voice volume difficult.

Still others prefer to have both ears covered so they aren’t distracted by what’s going on around them. Having two ears covered allows them to stay focused on their work. There are also those who like to listen to music while they work.
