Frequently asked questions
Why choose a wired headset instead of wireless?
Choose wired for a fixed desk and a tight budget. Wired headsets have a lower upfront cost, need no charging and give you a consistent connection, often with longer warranty coverage. Wireless lets you move away from your desk and connect to more than one device. Business-grade models of both types offer excellent sound quality today, so choose by how you work. Our wired vs wireless guide covers the tradeoffs.
Can a wired headset connect to both a computer and a desk phone?
Sometimes. A wired USB headset plugs into your computer, and some desk phones have a USB headset port: the Discover D713U plugs into the USB port on Yealink phones such as the T42S and T54W. A quick disconnect desk phone headset like the Poly HW540 can also reach a computer through an adapter cable that converts the QD connector to USB. If you switch between the two all day, ask us about a wireless headset whose base connects to both. Talk to an Advisor.
What do I need to connect a wired headset to a desk phone?
A desk phone headset ends in a quick disconnect (QD) connector, so it needs a second piece. If your phone has a headset port, use a direct connect cable made for your phone's brand and model, then press the phone's headset button to take calls. If your phone has no headset port, use a headset amplifier that connects through the handset port instead. Find the right cable for your phone on our quick disconnect headsets for office phones page.
Do wired headsets have noise cancelling?
Most wired office headsets have a noise-canceling microphone, which reduces the background noise your callers hear. Fewer have active noise cancellation (ANC), which reduces the noise you hear. The Discover D722U has a noise-canceling microphone and cushions that surround your ears, but no electronic ANC. Wired USB models with ANC include the EPOS Impact 860, the HP Poly Mission 800 series and the Jabra Evolve2 50. See more in our noise cancelling headsets for work.
Are wired headphones with a mic good enough for work calls?
For a few meetings in a quiet room, they can be. For hours of calls, a headset with a boom microphone has the edge. When we compared a boomless business headset with a boom headset, the gap in a quiet room was small, but with keyboard typing in the background the boom's advantage became easier to hear. A boom also lets you flip the microphone up to mute. Read do business headsets still need a microphone boom?
Should I get over-ear or on-ear cushions?
It comes down to comfort and noise. Over-ear cushions surround your ears and add passive isolation; the Discover D722U's memory foam cushions are also infused with cooling gel for long calls. On-ear cushions rest against your ears and can feel lighter, though some people find the pressure uncomfortable after several hours. If headbands bother you, an on-ear headset such as the Discover D713U skips the headband entirely.
Which wired headsets work with Microsoft Teams and Zoom?
Business wired USB headsets such as the Discover D722U, the Jabra Evolve2 50 and the HP Poly Mission series work with Microsoft Teams, Zoom and other UC apps. Some models come in two versions: a Teams version that adds Teams controls on the headset, and a UC version for people who also use programs such as Zoom or RingCentral. If Teams is your main platform, see our wired Microsoft Teams headsets.
