The Poly Savi 8240 UC is a wireless headset made for working professionals who use the computer to operate their business calls.
What is unique about this headset is DECT 6.0 wireless technology, which means you'll get about 10x the wireless range of Bluetooth devices..
Take your meetings and phone calls completely cordless for up to 300 feet away from your computer for the ultimate wireless freedom.
Deemed the best call center headset, you can have your sales team walk the aisles as they sell or have your customer service run to the printer without missing a beat – no matter their duty, they’ll be free to roam the office and not be tethered down by cables or poor connectivity.
Grab a cup of coffee.
No problem.
Let's find out together what this headset is all about and if it may be a good fit for you!
Side note: This Poly Savi 8240 UC is the new and improved version of the Plantronics Savi W440, almost identical except for a special USB dongle and slightly different buttons.

Comfort
The Plantronics Savi 8240 UC earpiece weighs in at under an ounce, which is about 50%-80% lighter than most other wireless headsets. What's great about having a lightweight headset is that it helps to be comfortable for all-day use.
I test all the Plantronics headsets and currently I'm testing the Bose 700 UC you can view the in-depth review here. This Bose headset weighs 9oz, which is over 9x the weight, and I find this Bose headset to not be comfortable for longer than 4-6 hours before my ears hurt, or I have to take a break.
Since the Savi 8240 weighs less than an ounce, I find it much more comfortable for a full 8+ hour workday.
Wearing Style - Convertible
The box includes a neckband, headband, and a variety of ear loops. By having so many options, you can easily find a fit that meets your needs and comfort preferences.
Some people are blessed with great hair and a perfect hairstyle and don't want to ruin it with a headband that goes over-the-head.
No problem.
Attach the ear loop and earbud to wear the earpiece over-the-ear and keep your hairdo intact. The picture below shows what the earpiece looks like with the ear hook on it.
It's worth mentioning that the earpiece goes inside your ear canal like apple earbuds, where other models such as the Discover D904 rests on top of the ear, which some people prefer not having something in the ear canal.
Some people find the ear loop uncomfortable and don't mind messing up their hair, so they prefer the headband option.
Since the headset is made to be convertible, it's not the most comfortable and best sound for the over the head option but still is very suitable when wearing over-the-head.
The headband is lightweight and is adjustable, so finding a fit for your head is easy, and soft leatherette ear cushions rest on top of your ear.
Most of the customers I speak to prefer to wear the headband option as it's typically the more comfortable option, and most don't mind the earpiece resting on top of the head.
Those who don't prefer an ear hook or headband have one last option of a neckband..
Most people do not choose the neckband. It does have the option of wearing it behind-the-neck.
The Savi 8240 has three flexible wearing styles, and most people can find a comfortable fit for them. When purchasing headsets for a team of people, it is easy to choose one headset model for almost everyone.
Since the wireless headset is designed to be convertible, you sacrifice a bit of comfort and sound quality, but overall I'd say the Savi 8240 is very comfortable.
As far as noise reduction features, it comes with active noise canceling, making these perfect for executives strolling the office, or call center agents in noisy environments. You don’t need a wired headset to get a good connection.
Savi 8240 Review & Mic Test Video - 12 Minutes
Watch this 12-minute video on the in-depth review of the Poly Savi 8240 UC wireless headset. We do a microphone test so you can hear the sound quality and noise-canceling microphone.
Sound Quality
Noise Canceling Microphone
The Poly Savi 8240 UC wireless noise cancelation headset has a professional noise-canceling microphone, which means that your customers will hear your voice loud and clear.
Have you ever talked to a customer service agent from a big cable company, and you can hear all their employees chatter in the background, making it difficult to hear.
Pretty frustrating, right?
Having a professional-grade noise-canceling microphone helps eliminate this background noise so your callers can hear your voice and not any of the distracting noises going on around you.
Why does this matter?
Distracting noises lead to less productivity, frustrated customers, and increased stress levels for agents on the phone.
Simple fix. Professional-grade noise-canceling microphone.
The Savi 8240 has a great microphone positioned close to your mouth. It has a short pickup range, which means that it's going to pick up your voice and not as much of the noises around you.
In the video above, we do a sound test that shows how well the microphone works. Watch the review video in the above section and fast forward to 7:20 to hear how it sounds.
Do you have a noisy environment?
- Loud machines
- Lots of loud co-workers
- Busy streets
- Barking dogs
- Kids being a bit rowdy
You may need to step up the noise canceling to the next level.
We did a review of this software that uses artificial intelligence to eliminate even more noise.
Surprisingly it worked incredibly well.

Audio quality for hearing
This Savi 8240 will not have the best sound quality for hearing because it's designed to be lightweight and comfortable for a full working day.
The speaker volume is a bit weak if you have any noises around you it makes it a bit difficult to hear the sound coming from the headset. That being said, for most situations, the volume level is perfectly sufficient and can be adjusted easily on the headset or computer.
Listening to music is a bit lacking because it does not have bass or good range in sound as it's a bit flat on the sound.
But.
It's still good enough to listen to your radio or music while you work but if you want high-quality sound you'll want to find a headset designed more for audio quality, such as the Bose 700 UC.
The earpiece has an earbud-style design so the silicon gel goes inside the ear canal which helps to provide better sound when wearing over-the-ear.
Most customers find the sound level to be sufficient enough for the majority of the work they do phone calls, meetings, and training materials.
Connectivity - USB only
The Poly Savi 8240 UC USB wireless headset has a USB dongle that comes included that plugs into the computer.
This is the only way it can connect to the computer.
What's unique about this headset is that it uses DECT 6.0 wireless technology instead of Bluetooth.
What's the benefit of DECT 6.0?
Wireless range is typically 5-10 times further than Bluetooth.
You'll be able to roam cordlessly all-around your home office get coffee, food, or check on your pets.
With some Bluetooth headsets, I can't make it much further than my office, let alone the kitchen.
Another benefit of DECT 6.0 is that it is a secure wireless technology.
The USB dongle size is slightly bigger than a Bluetooth one but much smaller than Plantronics Savi W440.
The headset comes paired to the USB dongle, plug in the dongle to the USB port on your computer, wait about 10 seconds, and that's it.
What software is it compatible with?
Many companies use different kinds of business communication software. A few examples are:
- RingCentral
- Zoom
- Jabber
- BlueJeans
- Microsoft Teams
- Vonage
- Google Meet
- GoToMeeting
This headset will work with all these platforms and any others including music and YouTube.
There is advanced functionality that only works on specific software, which most notably is remote answering.
Remote answering allows you to answer and end calls wirelessly with a push of the button on the earpiece.
Why does this matter?
Imagine stepping away from your computer to get coffee or a snack, and you have been waiting for an important client to call you back. Without a remote answering feature, you would have to either run back to your desk or miss the phone call.
This can lead to frustrated customers, loss of productivity, or missed sales opportunities.
With the remote answering feature, you can press a button on your earpiece to answer a call completely wirelessly up to 300 feet away from the computer.
For a full list of supported software that has this feature visit the Poly website here: https://www.poly.com/us/en/support/supported-softphones
When it comes to USB connectivity, this headset is also available in a USB-C version so if your computer only has USB-C ports then you would want to choose the variant that has USB-C. The part number for that model is: 211205-01.
The Plantronics Savi 8240 can be supplemented with the Plantronics Savi 8220, which is a spare headset compatible with the Plantronics Savi 8200 series.
Battery Life
The Savi 8240 has a 140mAh rated battery that provides up to 7 hours of talk time.
7 hours of battery life is on the low side as it may not last a full working day. It is also a lithium-ion battery and loses battery life over time so quickly the battery life can be reduced to 4-5 hours of talk time.
The problem with lower battery life is that if the headset dies that may mean you don't have a way of talking to customers or listening to meetings or music.
The battery takes 3 hours to fully recharge too so you may be without a headset for a while before utilizing it again.
If you make sure to charge your headset during breaks, lunch, and after work you should be ok for a while but you may find it's not sufficient for you in use of long periods at a time.
There's a solution if battery life is a concern for you.
The Discover D904 is a lightweight convertible headset that has unlimited talk time as it has 2 batteries included and the second battery charges in the charging base.
Learn more about the D904 here.
One thing I like about the Poly 8240 battery is that it is replaceable. Inevitably the battery will wear out and for about $30 you can get a replacement battery and switch it out easily.
Many Bluetooth headsets on the market are not replaceable which means you'll need to throw away your entire headset when the battery does run out.
Wireless Range - 300 Feet
DECT 6.0 gives this headset a max wireless range of about 10-20 times further than Bluetooth wireless headsets. Poly rates this headset as 590 feet, but that is a joke because in real-world environments with walls and radio frequencies, you will probably get about 200 feet, which is still much better than all Bluetooth headsets.
Another thing to consider is that if you have an office with many headsets nearby called headset density, DECT allows you to have many devices close by. With Bluetooth, you start to get range and sound degradation when you get near the 50 headsets within proximity. In comparison, the Savi 8240 and DECT wireless headsets can get closer to the 100-200 devices before receiving the same issues.
In regards to wireless range, this headset is the most range that you will get for a headset that connects directly to computers. With my Bluetooth headsets, I can't make it to the refrigerator or coffee pot without losing audio for my calls and music, making me sad. With Poly Savi 8240, I can easily reach my kitchen and coffee, which makes me happy :-).
Design
Poly always designs their products very well, and they didn't miss the mark on this headset either.
The Poly 8240 UC has an attractive black satin finish with a chrome microphone boom and a red accent button.
Wearing the headset makes you feel professional and that you're not wearing a cheaply made product.
Physical Buttons
The Savi 8240 headset has physical buttons around it to give you quick access to for easy adjustment.
- Volume +/-
- Mute
- On/Off (Answer or end calls with a push of a button)
