Wading your way through the overwhelming choices for business headsets can be challenging. There are literally hundreds to choose from. So how do you find the ones that are best for you?
There are multiple brands and models which only muddies the water and adds to the confusion because the choices seem endless.
Since our company was founded in 1994, back then you really didn’t have a lot of choices. There were essentially two brands; Plantronics (known today as Poly), and Jabra (known as GN Netcom at that time). Within each of these brands there were a very limited number of headset choices.
All this made shopping for new headsets pretty easy. Well, that’s not the case today. And in this blog, I’m hopeful that you’ll find today’s topic to be helpful in your search for new headsets.
Just like back in ‘94, the two dominant players in the headset space today are Poly, and Jabra. But, there’s been a lot of other companies that have joined in by offering headsets, which gives you more buying options.
Some of the companies that offer headsets today include:
- Poly
- Jabra
- EPOS (formerly Sennheiser)
- Yealink
- Logitech
- Discover
- Orosound
- Cyber Acoustics
- JPL
- Microsoft
- And scores of knock off brands
If that’s not enough to make your eyes cross, then add to this list that phone and phone service providers are now offering headsets. This includes companies like Avaya and Cisco for example.
The first thing you’ll need to do is to select a headset brand
And if you don’t consider some of the others, are you possibly missing out on an even better headset solution?
Ok, now that you’ve selected a brand, you’ll have to select an authorized source to obtain additional information, and ultimately, place an order because most of the manufacturers don’t sell direct to customers.
So, finding a good source can take some time and thought. You want to make sure that the company you’re dealing with can provide you with professional advice that’s based on experience, and is in good standings with the manufacturer, and reputable. And of course it would make a lot of sense to read customer reviews about the company as well.
Let’s say that you’ve narrowed it down to the brand
Now you’ll have to decide which kind of headset best meets your needs. And when I say needs, I could be referring to your current needs, but what about your future needs? If you only address your current needs, does that mean you’ll be back shopping for new headsets in the near future if you don’t take those future needs into consideration? Probably so.
So, it does make sense to give some thought to where you see your company going from a technology standpoint. If possible, you want to buy headsets that not only meet your current needs, but give you the flexibility to meet future needs as well.
Here’s one example of what I’m referring to. Let’s say that you currently use desk phones. You can purchase headsets that are known to work with those desk phones, but what about the direction your IT department is steering your company? Maybe there’s talk about moving away from desk phones and over to computer based softphones.
If that happens, then the headsets you purchased for your desk phones won’t work with the new Softphones. The result is you’ll be once again back out shopping for new headsets. So keep future needs in mind anytime you’re looking to buy new headsets.
Deciding which type of headset to buy
- Wired headsets for desk phones
- Wired headsets used with computers
- Wired headsets for use with computers, and mobile devices
- Wireless headsets used with desk phones
- Wireless headsets used with computers
- Wireless headsets that can be used with desk phones AND computers
- Wireless headsets that can be used with desk phones, computers and mobile devices
- And of course there are DECT headsets, and Bluetooth headsets. What’s the difference, and which should you get?
When you stop to consider that within each of these different headset categories, there are many headset options to choose from, well, it’s enough to make your head spin, and leave you feeling overwhelmed.
Hopefully I’m painting this picture clearly enough so that you understand, and appreciate how confusing buying headsets can be. Yes, you could just pick a brand, and consider a few models within that brand and just buy those. They’d probably be good enough, right? But are they? Is that really your best choice? Compared to what?
When you take all of this into consideration, it illustrates that buying headsets today really isn’t the same as buying headsets years ago. It’s gotten much more complicated for sure.
Fortunately, there is a better way, and I have to say that you’ll love this solution.
If you had a company to work with that specializes in headsets, and has for almost 30 years, well, that would probably give you confidence that they know a thing or two about headsets I’d imagine.
If that same company carried all the major brands like Poly, Jabra, EPOS, Logitech, Orosound, Discover, Yealink and others, including some cost saving refurbished models, that would probably give you the sense that you could get pretty much any headset from them.
In other words, a company that carries all the popular brands, and models, (one stop shop).
You’d probably also appreciate having the option to acquire your new headsets on an affordable, monthly pay as you go program with a low monthly rate.
Even better if that same program would also include replacement accessories like wireless headset batteries, replacement ear cushions and microphone wind screens etc. so you don’t have to buy them separately, or stock these accessories to have on hand.
Budgets can sometimes be tight, so a program like this helps you to acquire the technology products you need, even when there’s no money in the budget because a program like this is normally funded through operating budgets rather than capital equipment.
And I’m sure you’d really appreciate getting free shipping, personal setup assistance, (so you don’t have to figure out how to set up the headsets yourself) because you’d have someone to help you, and a personalized warranty, and exchange process.
Having a company like this to work with would really help you shortcut all the research you’d otherwise be doing. And all that research takes up a lot of your time, time you could be using in other, more productive ways.
So where do you find a company like that?
