collection of old headsets and audio video equipment staged for trade in

If your company has an equipment closet, storage room or a few boxes filled with old headsets and other communication equipment, don't be too quick to throw everything away, or send them to the recycler.

Some of that equipment may still have value.

Companies replace headsets, desk phones, speakerphones and video conferencing equipment all the time. The new equipment gets deployed, while the old equipment often ends up in a box where it sits until someone eventually decides to recycle or dispose of it.

But there's another place unused equipment tends to be unseen: desk drawers.

One forgotten headset probably isn't worth worrying about. Multiply that across hundreds or thousands of employees, though, and the equipment hiding out of sight could collectively represent meaningful value toward your next deployment.

That's why, before you dispose of old business communication equipment, there's a simple question worth asking:

What is this equipment worth? (it’s easy to assume it’s worth nothing)

Headset Advisor's Trade-In Program was created to help businesses answer that question.

To learn more, Drew explains how the Headset Advisor Trade-In Program works, what types of equipment may qualify and why it's worth checking before disposing of your old equipment.

What Is the Headset Advisor Trade-In Program?

The idea is pretty simple.

If your organization has business communication equipment it no longer needs, send us information about what you have. We'll evaluate the equipment and determine whether it qualifies for our Trade-In Program.

If it does, its trade-in value can be applied as credit toward new equipment purchased from Headset Advisor.

This is particularly useful when you're already planning an equipment refresh. Instead of buying your replacements first and figuring out what to do with the old equipment afterward, you can determine whether the equipment you're replacing has value before making the change.

That value may then help offset part of your next equipment purchase.

It's Not Just Old Headsets

Business headsets are an obvious place to start.

Headset Advisor may accept qualifying headsets from manufacturers such as Jabra, Poly, Yealink, EPOS and other brands commonly used by businesses.

But headsets aren't the only equipment worth checking.

Depending on what you have, qualifying equipment may also include:

  • Desk phones
  • Speakerphones
  • Video conferencing equipment
  • Other business communication devices

And don't assume something has no value simply because you don't see the exact model listed on our website.

Send us the information and let us take a look.

The worst time to discover equipment had trade-in value is after you've already disposed of it.

Before Getting a Trade-In Quote, Check the Desk Drawers

Your equipment closet may not tell the whole story.

It's common for an employee to receive a replacement headset and put the old one in a desk drawer. It may still work perfectly well, but once that drawer closes, the headset is essentially forgotten: out of sight, out of mind.

As mentioned above, one employee is no big deal, but across an enterprise, well, that paints a completely different picture.

So, before requesting a trade-in estimate, consider sending a company notice asking employees to check their desks, drawers and work areas for retired, unused headsets or other business communication equipment they're no longer using.

Collect everything first and you'll have a much better picture of what your organization actually has available to trade in.

The equipment you can see in the storage room may only be part of what you actually have.

Why Quantity Can Make a Big Difference

Suppose your company is replacing 100 headsets.

The normal process might be to request a quote, order 100 new headsets, deploy them and then decide what to do with the 100 you're replacing. Typically, they’re boxed up and exiled to the storeroom.

There's a better time to ask that question: before you place the new order.

And the larger the deployment, the more important this can become.

As Drew points out in the video, $10 of value on one headset isn't especially exciting.

But if an organization is replacing 500 of them, $10 each potentially becomes $5,000 that could be put toward the new deployment.

That's why we generally view the Trade-In Program as a solution for organizations with quantities of equipment rather than someone looking to trade in a single old headset.

What Determines the Trade-In Value?

Not every old headset is valuable, and we don't want to give you the impression that it is.

Several factors can affect what your equipment is worth, including:

  • Manufacturer and model
  • Age
  • Condition
  • Quantity
  • Current demand

Some older equipment may have little or no trade-in value. Damaged equipment may be worth considerably less than equipment that's complete and in good condition.

So a box of 15-year-old broken headsets isn't necessarily a hidden gold mine.

But the opposite assumption can also cost you money: don't assume equipment is worthless without checking first.

This is especially true when you have a significant quantity of the same or similar equipment.

How Does the Trade-In Process Work?

The process starts by telling us what you have.

You can use Headset Advisor's online Trade-In Program to enter information about your equipment and get an estimate. If you have models that aren't listed, send us the details and our team can evaluate them.

If you decide to move forward, Headset Advisor covers standard shipping for qualifying equipment sent to us.

Once the equipment arrives, we'll inspect it and confirm the final trade-in value based on the equipment actually received and its condition.

That last part is important.

An initial estimate is based on the information provided. The final value is determined after the equipment has been received and inspected.

Your Old Equipment Could Help Pay for Its Replacement

Here's where the timing of a trade-in becomes particularly useful.

If your organization is already planning to purchase replacement equipment from Headset Advisor, the value of your old equipment can potentially be applied toward that purchase.

Depending on the equipment and how the credit is being used, Headset Advisor may be able to offer up to 50% more than the equipment's normal market value when that value is applied toward your next purchase.

That doesn't mean every trade-in receives an additional 50%. The equipment, its value and how the credit is being applied all matter.

But it does give you another reason to evaluate your existing equipment before ordering its replacement.

There's Another Benefit: Keeping Usable Electronics in Circulation

Trade-in value isn't the only reason to take another look at old equipment.

Depending on the equipment and its condition, Headset Advisor may be able to refurbish, reuse or responsibly recycle it.

That can give usable equipment another life and help to keep it out of the landfill.

Of course, not everything can be reused. Age, condition and the type of equipment all matter.

But when you're replacing dozens or hundreds of devices, it's worth considering what happens to the old equipment as part of the deployment, not as an afterthought once the new equipment arrives.

Planning a Refresh? Check the Trade-In Value First

One of the most useful points Drew makes in the video is also one of the simplest:

Don't wait until after you've purchased the new equipment to decide what to do with the old equipment.

If you're planning a headset, phone or communication-equipment refresh, start by:

  • Identifying what you're replacing.
  • Check storerooms.
  • Check the equipment closets.
  • And if you have a larger organization, ask employees to check those desk drawers.
  • Then collect the model numbers and quantities and let us determine whether any of that equipment has trade-in value.

That gives you useful information before you make the next purchasing decision.

Trade-In Can Also Work With Managed Headsets

Buying another fleet of headsets isn't your only option.

If you're considering Headset Advisor's Managed Headsets Program, your existing equipment may provide another way to help make that transition.

Qualifying equipment can potentially be traded in and its value applied toward your move to Managed Headsets. Instead of purchasing another large fleet upfront, you transition to a program where Headset Advisor helps manage the equipment going forward.

Managed Headsets is designed for business deployments of 10 or more headsets and provides the equipment for one predictable monthly rate per user, along with services such as covered replacements, replacement batteries and ear cushions, turnover swaps and ongoing support.

Before You Clean Out That Equipment Closet, Ask One Question

Old technology has a way of disappearing.

Some of it ends up in storerooms. Some sit in boxes. Some get pushed to the back of equipment closets.

And some of it may be sitting three feet away from an employee in a desk drawer.

Eventually someone decides it's time to clean everything out.

Before that happens, ask:

What is this equipment worth?

So, it’s important to check the value before you dispose of it. And, if we can refurbish and redeploy them, or send them to a certified electronics equipment recycler, that helps to assure they don’t end up in a landfill somewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trading In Old Business Headsets and Equipment

Can I trade in old business headsets?

Potentially. Headset Advisor evaluates business headsets based on factors including the manufacturer, model, condition and quantity. Headsets from Jabra, Poly, Yealink, EPOS and other business headset manufacturers may qualify.

Does Headset Advisor only accept headsets?

No. Depending on the equipment, Headset Advisor may also be interested in desk phones, speakerphones, video conferencing equipment and other business communication devices.

What if my equipment isn't listed on the Trade-In Program page?

Send us the model information and quantity. Equipment that isn't currently listed may still qualify, and our team can evaluate what you have.

Does every old headset have trade-in value?

No. Model, age, condition, quantity and current demand all affect value. Some very old or damaged equipment may have little or no trade-in value.

Should we collect our old equipment before requesting an estimate?

That's a good idea, particularly for larger organizations. Check storage areas and equipment closets, and consider asking employees to look through desks and drawers for unused headsets. This can give you a more complete picture of what your organization actually has.

Who pays to ship the trade-in equipment?

Headset Advisor covers standard shipping for qualifying equipment sent to us as part of the Trade-In Program.

Is the initial trade-in estimate the final value?

Not necessarily. The final trade-in value is confirmed after Headset Advisor receives and inspects the equipment and verifies its condition.

Can trade-in credit be used toward new equipment?

Yes. Qualifying trade-in value can be applied toward replacement equipment purchased from Headset Advisor. Depending on the equipment and how the credit is used, Headset Advisor may be able to offer up to 50% more than its normal market value when applied toward your next purchase.

Can trade-in value be applied toward Managed Headsets?

Qualifying equipment may potentially be used as part of a transition to Headset Advisor's Managed Headsets Program. Talk with Headset Advisor about what you're replacing and the options available for your deployment.
